Happy Memorial Day Weekend, Disruptors. Go play outside. Seriously, I’ll wait. The internet will still be here when you get back.
Oh, you’re back already. Well, welcome! We have been scouring the internet all week for the badass-est, rage-iest, thought-provokiest writing on feminism that’s not written by us. Tell us about what you’ve been reading in the comments!
- Kicking it off with friend of the blog Ambidancetrous: Why telling people they have the option to switch roles is not enough. We followed it up with some ideas on how to normalize nontraditional roles for beginners: Use gender neutral language. Have intermediates on hand to jump in as the other role during the lesson. Dance the nontraditional role as a teacher. Do drills as both lead and follow before picking a role.
- Hey conservative nutbag media “personalities”, did you know you can actually criticize the efficacy of public employees WITHOUT THREATENING TO MURDER THEM?! Send a note to their home=death threat. Say it on a syndicated political talk show=just expressing yourself and your constitutional rights. Bonus! SO MANY EXAMPLES of the American Right’s problem with eliminationist rhetoric.
- American Apparel sells unisex shirts. Great! Except the male models get to wear pants, shoes, and presumably underwear too, while the female models only get to wear the shirt. Bonus! Some serious boobs and butt shots going on. NSFW.
- This next link contains two of DDP’s favorite things: Doctor Who and consent. I can’t actually read it because I’m not caught up on Doctor Who, but I’m giddy with excitement about the quote our editor pulled:
“As a wise man once said in a very complex song-and-dance number involving puppets, Doctor Who is about the triumph of intellect and romance over brute force and cynicism. Kissing people when they don’t want to be kissed is nothing if not the triumph of brute force, and it sure ain’t romantic. This Doctor is always telling us what’s cool. You know what’s cooler than all the bowties, fezzes, and Stetsons in the universe? Consent.” CAUTION: SPOILERS EVERYWHERE.
